This site is dedicated to the hobby of model
miniatures. Model builders attempt to capture real
life or imaginary subjects in miniature form. These subjects
can be military vehicles, armor, aircraft, sci-fi vehicles, figures,
race cars or what ever captures your imagination.
These miniatures are constructed most
commonly of plastic, but resin is quickly entering the market
especially by the "limited run" manufacturers. However, wood,
paper and metal are also available to the modeler who so
desires. Subjects range in the hundreds if not
thousands with more being added every month.
Modeling miniatures is relaxing, develops
fine motor skills, allows customization and imagination and gives
the modeler a sense of accomplishment in a project that may take a
couple of hours to many months to accomplish.
Many modelers are history buffs as well
through the research that is needed to make an accurate
miniature. Accuracy is dependent on the individual modeler
with some builders preferring to build "out of the box" (OOB) which
is using only the pieces that come with the kit. Others use
after-market products to add to what they receive in the
kit. Many long time modelers eventually go into
"scratch-building", which is creating pieces from "scratch".
This allows the modeler basically unlimited creation possibilities
as he is not bound by what is available to him "on the
shelf".
Like most modelers, I built models as a child
using glue only. No paint, no accuracy considerations, just
buy the box and put it together. I still remember a nice sense
of accomplishment when the last piece was cemented in place.
About a year and a half ago I was thinking of a hobby to
start. I had been building scale railroads and that hobby was
now limited by space and time due to the addition of two children to
the family.
I was in Houston, TX visiting customers when
I decided to drop into Hobby Island. What I saw astounded
me. Gone were the kid's toys of my youth and in its place were
highly detailed, accurate miniature recreations of just about
anything with wheels, tracks, propellers or wings. I was
officially hooked. I purchased 2 kits that day, a few figures
and some diorama supplies with an idea starting to materialize of
what I wanted to build. The Kettenkraftad shown on these pages
was my first model I had built since I was a child.
I have built many miniatures since then with
my skills developing ever since. I have a pretty nice model
stash, a large paint collection and a new airbrush to play
with. I would say I consider myself a moderately skilled
builder. Some of the things I see being built on websites and
at contests still amaze me in the skill these men and women
possess.
I hope you enjoy the miniatures you see here
and maybe learn a little bit of history as well. If you have
any questions, feel free to contact me and I would be happy to
discuss my hobby with you !
